Based in Stratford, Ontario, the Stratford Festival is one of the world’s foremost repertory theatre companies. Job Description
Sewer & Tailor
The Stratford Festival is currently accepting applications for the position of Sewer/Tailor for the 2024 season. We are looking for candidates with junior to senior level sewing experience. This unionized position reports to their Cutter and the Costume Director and is part of the Wardrobe Department team.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for completing sewing tasks within a timely manner
- Proficiency, accuracy and independent sewing
- Positive work ethic and willingness to learn new techniques
- Improving upon current skills and speed
Qualifications:
- The sewer/tailor needs to be proficient in the following skills:
§ Flat basting, tailor tacking, hand finishing
§ Can build collars, cuffs and bum rolls without supervision
§ Confident in fine hand finishing, working with multiple layers and difficult fabrics
§ Ability to set in a variety of zippers, sleeves, collars and complete pockets
§ Basic understanding of doublet and/or bodice construction, trouser construction, cartridge pleating, robes and capes, unstructured coats, basic jacket and vest construction
- Has the ability to understand the Cutter’s and First Hand’s step by step instructions
Preference will be given to candidates with experience sewing historical costumes.
Multiple contracts available based on skill level. This seasonal position is located in Stratford, Ontario and will begin Monday January 29th 2024. Contract length will be based on departmental needs based on skill level.
