BTW is Canada’s longest running theatre company dedicated to the works of Black and diasporic communities. Its mission is to promote and produce outstanding theatre that educates, entertains and inspires. The company strives to create greater cross-cultural understanding by expanding the representation of Black Canadian artists. 

Currently BTW produces one to two mainstage productions per year, as well as a touring production. Other related activities include a theatre festival, a play reading series, various smaller events and fundraisers. 

Job Description

Black Theatre Workshop (BTW) is currently seeking a Program Manager to manage the growth of the national Artist Mentorship Program in both English and French. They will work under the leadership of the Artistic Director and are responsible for the overall logistical and organizational aspects of the program. This could include mentoring, outreach, developing workshops and developing other faculty members.

The Program Manager’s tasks and responsibilities shall include but not be limited to:

  • Act as an on-site director for the English and French programs and main artistic liaison.
  • Review short and medium term goals and plans for the program.
  • Review the design, priorities and criteria of the program.
  • Contribute ideas and suggestions in order improve the program.
  • Work closely with senior staff to develop and finalize program budgets.
  • Participate in the planning of any final artistic presentations or showcases.
  • Research, identify and pursue prospective new mentees and mentors.
  • Orient and prepare mentors & visiting artists around philosophy of the program.
  • Train mentors and aid in developing a specific schedule based on the curriculum.
  • Delegate authority as appropriate to the guest artists/mentors to run the program activities through the established curriculum.
  • Replace mentors as needed during short term scheduling issues.
  • Research, identify and pursue prospective new mentees and mentors.
  • Participate in the audition/interview process for new applicants.
  • Evaluation of the participants’ progress throughout the year.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Theatre schools and training programs.
  • Be a representative for the Artist Mentorship Program within our communities.
  • Ensure that all AMP material is organized and saved for archives purposes.
  • Ensure that reports on the program are provided to senior staff and granting agencies as requested.
  • Assist with the marketing campaigns, social media strategy and fundraising efforts when needed.

Qualifications and key competencies

  • Artistic experience in a theatre environment is a valuable and desired asset.    
  • Experience or interest in strategy development and planning. 
  • Experience empowering and mentoring creative individuals. 
  • Knowledge of the local and national theatre landscape
  • Sound knowledge of production and budgeting processes
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; professional fluency in French required
