Company Overview
Pleiades Theatre
https://www.pleiadestheatre.org/
Our mandate is: Sharing 1st and 2nd generation Canadian stories.
We wish to redefine what it means to be “Canadian” (because for too long, that definition has been too narrow) by sharing stories from 1st and 2nd generation Canadians with each other, Tkaronto, and the world. We encourage 1st and 2nd generation storytellers (particularly artists of colour, but through intersectionality also d/Deaf artists, artists with disabilities, artists living with mental illness, New Gen artists, 2SLBTQIAP artists, and Indigenous artists) to create:
· INSPIRATIONS: new, relevant stories exploring their experiences;
· TRANSLATIONS: sharing stories from other languages for all audiences;
· ADAPTATIONS: exploring existing works through their lens.
Our goals are:
- To provide communities who may not have representation in the Tkaronto and Canadian theatre community with meaningful, practical, and financial support in bringing their stories to the stage through partnerships with community organizations.
- To train emerging theatre artists and practitioners from these communities by providing them through our seasonal activities and productions:
* Mentorships * On-the-job training * Professional, practical experience
- To engage in customized, multi-lingual, educational, in-school programs that focus on theatre, language, and storytelling at all levels of education.
Modern Times Stage Company
https://www.moderntimesstage.com/
Established in 1989 by iconic Persian theatre director Soheil Parsa, Modern Times Stage Company is an imaginative, award-winning, immigrant theatre organization that focuses on celebrating and creating radical theatre full of imagination – involving narratives, stories, forms, and disciplines from across the World!
We bring together a fusion of cultures, politics, philosophies, and artistic disciplines from across the globe into a contemporary, globalized Canadian context. Additionally, we support artists, voices, and communities emanating from the Persian, Desi, Arab, Muslim, Brown, South Asian, IBPOC, LGBTQ+, and other equity-seeking groups. Regardless of Liberal or Conservative government, Canada takes in a higher percentage of immigrants than any other Western country, and we empower the voices of this diverse, globalized, Canadian future.
In this way, we consider ourselves the most Canadian theatre organization of them all!
A theatre that’s devoted to Canadian Futurism.
Recent work:
· “CRAZE” (Tarragon Theatre),
· “The Caged Bird Sings” (Aga Khan Museum),
