Company Overview

The Ship’s Company Theatre is located in picturesque Parrsboro, on the shores of the Bay of Fundy, in Cumberland Country, Nova Scotia. The Ship’s Company came into existence in 1984 after the recovery and restoration of a storied local ferry vessel, the M.V. Kipawo, when founders Michael Fuller and Mary Vingoe staged the first production right on the deck. “You’ll Be in Her Arms by Midnight and Other Parrsboro Stories” was received with much excitement by the local community, and after six days of success and sold-out houses, the Ship’s Company Theatre set sail.

This tremendous local, regional, and national support has continued over the years, and in 2004 – after twenty years live on the deck – the Ship’s Company opened the doors to a new two-million dollar facility supported by all levels of government, as well as corporate and individual donations. Since then, the production season has grown to 14 weeks and our scope and operating budget has increased many-fold.

The Ship’s Company Theatre now offers a full mainstage production, with two highlight plays, a yearly tribute show, and a second stage as well as new initiatives such as our Shipwrights Residency, a residency for BIPOC playwrights. Additionally, our concert series, which has been running for over twenty years, continues to showcase Atlantic-Canadian musicians and songwriters, and to grow.

The company’s success is the result of a strong vision, commitment to and from our artists, the enormous support of our local communities, and a loyal audience base. By diligently maintaining the integrity of it’s mission, the Ship’s Company has become a cornerstone of the cultural and economic health of Parrsboro, as well as the whole of Cumberland County.
