Young People’s Theatre (YPT), now in its 59th season, is co-led by Artistic Director Herbie Barnes and Executive Director Camilla Holland. As Canada’s largest and oldest professional theatre for young audiences, the company produces and presents a full season of theatre and arts education programming, serving approximately 150,000 patrons annually. With the purchase and renovation of YPT 161 Studios across the street from its historic theatre, YPT has expanded its footprint, increased its accessibility, refreshed its lobbies, and upgraded the theatrical equipment capabilities of its 433-seat Ada Slaight Stage and 115-seat Studio. United in vision, the two facilities anchor the corner of Front and Frederick streets in downtown Toronto creating Canada’s largest theatre complex for young people. With its broad-ranging educational programs and exceptional professional productions, the company has an annual operating budget of approximately $5 million. 

Job Description

YPT is currently searching for a candidate to fill the full-time position of Director of Finance. Playing a critical role in the leadership of the organization, this position is responsible for the overall financial operations of YPT and liaises constantly with all department heads including Production & Planning, Marketing & Communications, Development, Artistic, Education & Participation, and Operations.

Supported by two staff, the ideal candidate is collaborative, adept at handling a complex and large portfolio, detail-oriented, and comfortable with a hands-on approach. Administrative staff currently follow a hybrid model of on-site and remote work. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and monitor annual budget of the theatre and manage budget cycle
  • Work with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee in planning financial strategy, providing recommendations in support of strategic decision-making
  • Provide analysis, reporting, and manage the cash flow of the organization
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting including but not limited to payroll, accounts payable, box office and accounts receivable functions.
  • Maintain and reconcile various deferred revenue accounts, including tracking of new funding and related expenditures 
  • Maintain, monitor, and implement accounting processes and internal controls to prevent errors and fraud
  • Prepare and present monthly financial updates to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors
  • Prepare financial component of grant applications and reports for arts councils and funding bodies
  • Liaise with department heads to manage and control expenditures
  • Ensures the theatre’s compliance with financial and taxation legislation
  • Oversee YPT’s annual audit process, serving as the primary point of contact
  • Participation in industry-specific events and opportunities.
  • Remain current with changes to accounting standards, implementing updates as needed

Required Skills:

  • Undergraduate university degree with an accounting specialization
  • Minimum of six years’ experience in a senior financial role, preferably in a not-for-profit environment, with increasing responsibilities
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, with a keen attention to detail
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple assignments at once, with minimal supervision
  • High proficiency in MS Excel, Word and computerized accounting systems
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (“CPA”) designation, knowledge of accounting standards for not-for-profit and experience in a not-for-profit performing arts organization is a valuable asset

Compensation & Benefits

Annual salary range: $95,000 - $105,000.

Extended health benefits and matching RRSP up to 3% (after completion of probationary period), personal days and sick days, vacation allocation of 20 paid days per year, professional development opportunities, reimbursement of membership dues required to maintain professional designation.
