Company Overview
Carousel Players is a professional theatre company based in St Catharines, Ontario, that specializes in making and teaching theatre for young people. Our core activities are producing touring productions for school and public audiences; working with artists to create new plays for young audiences; and providing arts education to young people ages 4-14. In the spring of 2024 we will present the innaugural Niagara Children's Festival, a three day, multi-community festival of theatre for young audiences.
Carousel Players creates two or more touring theatre productions each season for elementary school age audiences. These tours travel to schools and community venues in the Niagara, Hamilton, Halton, Wentworth, and Brant Regions. Our work frequently tours or is presented at other theatres for young audiences outside of Southern Ontario. We have taken our shows to British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Northern Ontario in the past five years.
Carousel Players provides drama education programs throughout the year through our Theatre School in municipalities around the Niagara Region. The Theatre School also works with elementary schools to provide After School Drama classes and our Playlinks in-classroom workshop program.
Carousel Players is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and ASSITEJ Canada, and is a certified Living Wage employer.
Job Description
Niagara's award-winning theatre for young audiences, Carousel Players, is pleased to invite applications for the position of General Manager. This is a full-time, permanent position based in St Catharines with a start date of July 3, 2023.
The General Manager shares the organizational leadership of Carousel Players with Artistic Director Monica Dufault. The General Manager has specific responsibility for the operations of Carousel Players including planning, financial management, fundraising and development, human resource management, facility management, board relations, and the day to day operations of the organization.

A candidate for this position should demonstrate the following
- A love of theatre for young audiences
- An understanding of the business of theatre production and the unique realities of the theatre for young audiences sector
- A commitment to creating equity and access for all staff, artists, audiences, and students
- Three or more years of management experience in the operation of a small not-for-profit organization including planning, budgeting, and fundraising
- Knowledge of the collective agreements pertaining to PACT member companies
- Experience using MS Office, Google Cloud, Quickbooks, and e-commerce software
- Spoken and written English proficiency sufficient to lead meetings; have conversations and email exchanges; write proposals and grant applications; and ensure accuracy in the content of written and spoken messages
Other qualities and skills that are not required but are considered an asset:
- Post-secondary training in arts management or non-profit management
- Employment experience in the theatre sector, particularly theatre for young audiences
- Experience working in touring theatre under the Canadian Theatre Agreement (CTA)
- Experience in contracting and human resources management
- Experience in facility management
- Experience working with a Board of Directors
- Knowledge of the Niagara Region’s geography and communities
- Knowledge of the elementary education sector in Ontario
Candidates must be willing to relocate to the Niagara Region and able to start full-time work July 3, 2023.
Other compensation includes support and time for professional development, a cell phone subsidy, and two weeks paid vacation. There will be a three-month probationary period, after which 3% RRSP matching contributions and extended health benefits will be added to the compensation package.
