Company Overview

Manitoba Theatre for Young People is one of the largest theatres for young audiences in Canada and plays a leading role in theatre in the country. MTYP has the privilege of being located in Treaty 1, in the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, and the National Homeland of the Red River Métis, operating out of the first purpose-built facility for young audiences in Canada, situated at The Forks in Winnipeg. In addition to productions and touring, and being the proud home of Native Youth Theatre, MTYP serves 1,600 students annually through its MTYP School programming.

Job Description

MTYP is seeking a strong administrator and arts educator who is passionate about theatre, to join its team as School Director. As a member of the MTYP Management Team, the School Director is responsible for ensuring the ongoing application and review of MTYP’s curriculum for all School activities. The position also supports the long-term strategic planning and advancement of MTYP. The position supports and supervises all School positions and independent contractors that may be engaged for School programming and activities, including paid and volunteer roles. Reporting to the Artistic Director, the School Director exhibits a high level of integrity, and maintains a safe and appropriate working environment for School personnel and faculty that promotes learning, growth, and positive outcomes for students. To be successful in this role, candidates should be organized, resourceful, and have experience in forming and leading collaborative teams and strategies that support building community engagement. In addition to the responsibilities as School Director, the individual will be expected to regularly teach within each session, as well as deliver workshops and other outreach activities as may be scheduled throughout the season. Those who thrive in busy environments working towards the successful completion of multiple projects would do well in this position.

Additional requirements for success:
• Professional experience as arts educator, theatre practitioner, and in administration roles.
• Pedagogical training and experience.
• Demonstrated ability to create and manage budgets and schedules.
• Collaborative and compassionate problem-solver.
• Post-secondary training in theatre or education is an asset.

This is a full time, permanent position with an annual salary of $55,000. Compensation package also includes opportunity to participate in the MTYP health plan (pending eligibility), matching RSP program, and 15 days of vacation accrued annually. Standard hours of work may vary from session to session and will be negotiated with the successful candidate in alignment with the programming needs of the MTYP School. Typical work week for the majority of the year will be from Tuesday – Saturday; must be available to work evenings and weekends.
